U.S. B-2 visa: tourism and private visits
B-2 is for temporary visits such as tourism, visiting relatives or medical treatment. Visa validity for travel and the length of each authorised stay are different matters.

Purpose and eligibility
Border officials determine the stay; check the I-94 record rather than assuming everyone receives six months. B-2 does not authorise ordinary employment or a full study programme. Before paying, check current nationality restrictions, application location rules and the selected consulate’s instructions.
Documents to prepare
This preparation checklist is indicative. Final requirements depend on nationality, status and application location; follow the competent authority’s instructions.
- Passport and evidence of lawful residence in the country where you apply.
- Application form, photograph and payment confirmations required by the receiving authority.
- Evidence of the purpose of travel, funding, accommodation and insurance required for your procedure.
- DS-160 confirmation, passport, photograph and appointment/payment documents under consular instructions.
- Evidence explaining the purpose, budget and plans to return; medical provider and funding documents for treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Is an invitation mandatory for a tourist visa?
The State Department does not require an invitation as a mandatory visitor visa document. The applicant’s circumstances are assessed; a friend’s letter does not guarantee approval.
Can I take a language programme on B-2?
A study programme generally requires F-1. A short recreational course without academic credit differs from full study; a blanket “under 18 hours is allowed” rule is misleading.
