Tourism generally uses the visitor visa / TRV category when the traveller needs a visa. Before preparing an application, use the official IRCC tool to check whether you need a TRV, an eTA or another document.

Purpose and eligibility

A tourism application should explain the itinerary, duration, budget and plans to leave at the end of the visit. There is no reason to invent relatives or an invitation for a tourist trip. IRCC processing times vary by country and change; a guaranteed 30–50-day turnaround is inappropriate.

Documents to prepare

This preparation checklist is indicative. Final requirements depend on nationality, status and application location; follow the competent authority’s instructions.

  • Passport and evidence of lawful residence in the country where you apply.
  • Application form, photograph and payment confirmations required by the receiving authority.
  • Evidence of the purpose of travel, funding, accommodation and insurance required for your procedure.
  • Realistic itinerary and intended dates, accommodation plans and budget.
  • Evidence of funds, current activities and reasons to return relevant to your circumstances.
  • Documents and digital files under the personalised IRCC checklist; biometrics if required.

  2. Check that names, dates, addresses and the purpose of travel agree across all documents.
  3. Follow the official appointment, submission and biometric procedures; retain confirmations and your application reference.

Processing times and costs

Appointment availability, document preparation and application processing are separate stages. Check current times and fees for your country and application location. Government fees, translations, insurance and document preparation services are separate costs where applicable. Neither an issue date nor a favourable decision can be guaranteed. IRCC lists the visitor visa fee from CAD 100; biometrics and other applicable costs may be additional.

Must I buy tickets before a decision?

Non-refundable spending before a decision carries a risk. Prepare truthful travel plans and follow any specific IRCC request for supporting evidence.

How long are the visa and each stay valid?

Visa validity is not the length of every visit. Conditions and duration of admission are determined when entering Canada; the same period cannot be promised to everyone.
